Cold Salt Water "Hydrotherapy" Spa Treatments

The application of cold to an injured and/or painful; area is hardly a new therapeutic concept. The Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about the use of cold therapy to control pain and swelling in the 14th century BC.  The roman physician Galen described the use of cold compresses for analgesia following soft tissue injuries in the 1st century A.D.  During the Middle Ages, ice was used for preparative anaesthesia.

Cold therapy in the form of ice has been used extensively in the athletic training environment for the treatment of sports injuries for many years.  In coastal locations, training horses in sea water is a traditional method of easing stresses and strains in legs.

Standing horses in cold streams is another traditional practice recognized as beneficial for sore legs. As most horses are located in areas where making use of beaches or streams is not an option, cold hosing or ice packs are often the first line of treatment.

When an injury is swollen, it cannot heal properly until swelling is reduced and controlled.  By reducing the swelling and encouraging damaged tissues to begin repairing, spa therapy triggers the start of the healing process.

The equine and canine cold salt water spa is a vital treatment for reducing inflammation in lower leg injuries and accelerating the body's natural healing processes.

Once initial swelling is reduced, continued spa treatments can control any further swelling that may interfere with healing.

Review the findings from research of Associate Professor Evan Hunt MVSc, PhD, G.Dip.Ed (Tert)

The horse is simply walked into the center chamber of the spa unit, doors closed at each end -- the center chamber then fills
with water -- the air jets commence the therapeutic massage effect and treatment
for the horse.

Spa therapy can help treat injured tendons, ligaments, shins, hooves, wounds, cuts and bruises.  Regular use of the spa can greatly reduce everyday stresses and strains that could develop into more serious injuries. Read what Master Farriers, RN Rogers & Sons have found.
